Following the latest worrying developments in Syria, European Democrat Students (EDS) condemns the aggressive supressing of civil uprising by Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party lead Government and calls on both, Syrian Arab Army and Free Syrian Army to refrain from the escalation of violence across the state.
Recognizing the importance of peaceful transition, EDS calls on political platforms under the rule of Socialist Ba'ath Party and actors responsible for the recent bombardment and killing of civilian population, namely president Bashar al-Assad, to step down at will, as they cannot be the legitimate representatives of the “people of the wind of change”.
Fully realizing the necessities of young generations deeply rooted in the future of liberty rather than in the current undemocratic regime, the EDS congratulate and strongly support those who have shown outstanding courage and took active part in the transition and helped to consolidate civil society raising its voice. Yet all involved parties, notably Socialist Ba'ath Party and Syrian National Council, must commence peace negotiations immediately, facilitate international humanitarian aid access and step on a path towards peaceful solution that will eventually stabilize Syria.
Russian Federation, Iran, United States and other international actors shall give way and express full support to Kofi Annan, the newly appointed UN-Arab League joint envoy for Syria, to initiate the peace talks between warring parties. Reiterating the international law provisions deriving from International Criminal Court case Nicaragua v United States, EDS encourages all international actors to avoid any actions that would fuel the conflict in Syria and result in additional civil casualties.
EDS, the official student organisation of the European People's Party (EPP) and one of the oldest and largest youth organisations in Europe, strongly supports International Youth Democrat Union (IYDU) in its global manifestation for Democracy, Freedom and Human Dignity.
